Does a CURLY Perm Actually Work on African American Hair?

NOT YO MAMA’S JHERI CURL 😉

IMG_3969_result We started out with 6 month old natural hair, with relaxed ends. Ms. Carla was ready to go completely curly!

Our first option was a Rod-Set, but lets be real. Who’s really that gentle in maintaining a rod set longer than 3 days-week?…..riiiight….

so,

While I was at the Beauty Store shopping around, I ran into this perm by the name of “Quantum Extra Firm.”

Long Story Short, We decided to try! 🙂

Ms. Carla’s Hair went into small yellow rods in order to reach the desired tightness of curl.

  1. Safety ProceduresIMG_3985_result
  2.  Rods went on
  3.  Solution went on
  4. Rinse for 5 min
  5. Pre-neutralize 5min
  6. Neutralize 5 min
  7. Remove Rods & Rinse

Beautiful!

Now, as you can see, the ends are still straight. Thats because the ends have been previously relxed. Nevr use a curly perm on relaxed hair..

Now its time for the Style. 🙂

We No longer wanted those ends, so we decide to cut them & give Ms. Carla an elevated Haircut <3.

Check Her Out!

    1) do you have to keep the perm wet like a jherri curl or can it be dry
    2) with this perm did she experience a lot of breakage
    3) How long does the perm usually last? Is it around 2 months like a relaxer or can it last longer?

Hey Tai, please excuse late response
1.) It does not need to stay wet, when it dries, you will still have curls. (unless you pick them out)
2.)no breakage; she keeps it curly instead of trying to straighten afterwards
3.)it lasts until your natural hair grows out too much for your liking, and then we do the perm all over again. 3 months depending on preference

      Thank you, hope this helps!

    This turned out really well!

One question following the answers above: When you re-apply after 3 months, do you need to re-process all of the hair or just the roots? Will it cause damage to the hair that was already processed?

I am really worried i am considering doing a curly perm. I last relaxed my hair in January now its August but i don’t want to cut my hair even if its to get this hair style done. And also my hair was previously tinted 2 years ago. I been reading and watching videos about this and i keep on being discouraged that its not a good idea to do curl perm with previously relaxed hair i have to grow out my natural hair. Some hair styled once told me it just depends with my hair strength that it won’t break out. My hair is really long all the way down to my side sholders i can’t imagine cutting it. Is it actually impossible to get this hairstyle done without cutting my hair🥺.
